No, not Denki (quite yet), but Nintendo!
The games press has been all a-flutter this morning with the news that BusinessWeek (like Edge, but for people with nice ties) has voted Nintendo ‘the greatest company on earth’ in its annual Top 40 list.
The mighty N edged out other tech giants such as Apple and Google to scoop the top spot – and it’s not simply a quick straw poll in the office based on the journalists quite fancying a free Wii. BusinessWeek looks for factors such as ’sales growth rate’ and ‘rise of market capitalisation’.
We’ve not found anything specifying excellent plumbing or admirable princess safety figures, but we’re sure that’s taken into account too.
According to the magazine, the top 40 represents “commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future”. So there.
Which all in all is pretty good news for the videogames world. Even in the recession and general misery games companies can excel. Plus it shows that Nintendo’s approach with more ‘mainstream’ (sorry Dave) games like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit seems to be working out rather well.
Which leads us to one question – does this mean we can all now reassure our parents that a career in videogames is in fact a *real* job?
What do you think, readers?
