Since starting the official Denki blog back in way, way back in June, we’ve been asked several times why we talk so much about things which, well, just aren’t about games…
Our delight with Pixar’s ongoing fabulousness, our fascination with the television and movie industries and our abiding interest in random ‘stuff‘ – all combine to confuse some readers and make them wonder why we’re not more focused on what we actually do – like making games.
It’s perfectly simple. Colin wrote about it in one of his Gamasutra blogs earlier this year, but we can sum it up for you right now: being nosey is a good thing.
If you’re only interested in your own specific little niche, then you’re going to miss huge amounts of interesting, useful and genuinely mind-expanding stuff.
Most of the things that Denki do which are considered unusual, strange or offbeat within the games industry are shamelessly ‘inspired by’ other areas of the arts or media. Theatre, film, music and television have been around for hundreds of years in most cases and have already forgotten more than the games industry has learned.
Even ‘proper’ businesses have come up against issues like forming and controlling creative teams and ensuring a regular and inspiring release schedule. If we ignore all of that collective wisdom and experience and just look at what the games business has achieved in the last 20 years, then we’re not going to do ourselves any favours.
Rather than geek out in private over the role of ‘Show Runner‘, the magazine publishing process, the concept of creative assembly lines, or the need for consistency and repertoire, we thought we’d share them with you, our valued readers.
They’re the things we find ourselves talking about over lunch, or a post-work beer and end up thumping tables and gesticulating wildly about.
We think they’re interesting. We hope they’re (in some cases) useful. We assume we’re not so special and unique that no one else in the world isn’t equally as nosey as we are. Hence these blog posts. Plus we’re saving all the Denki games-related stuff for 2010 [really, watch this space...]
