It’s with a heavy heart that I have to announce a major restructuring of Denki that will inevitably involve losing many of our supremely talented colleagues – not to mention friends – from the team.
After ten years in business and despite weathering some truly awful periods in the industry during those years, it’s the first time we’ve been forced to take such extreme measures. So it’s probably a good indication of just how tough the market conditions are becoming for mid-size developers at the moment.
My advice? If you’re an Independent Developer, and you’re not selling games directly to customers yet, start worrying, because this industry is changing beyond all recognition.
The obvious first question is “Why has this happened?” – the answer, unfortunately, is rather less obvious. The main reason is that Denki has been running on an old business model. We rely on “the industry” for funding. Which wouldn’t be so bad, except we’re making games for people who love games – which isn’t necessarily “the industry” unfortunately.
As a result we haven’t been able to find the right publishing partner for Quarrel. Despite the game being finished, super polished, and everyone who plays it having great fun with it, we’ve slowly been remembering why we got out of the traditional games industry for so long and escaped to Interactive Television in the first place: this industry doesn’t value good games. Players do, but the games industry doesn’t. Instead it values low risk games – not even “calculated” risk games, just low risk. And that leads to bogus sweeping generalisations such as “Gamers don’t play word games”.
We’ve heard that from a lot of people, but never from the gamers who have actually played Quarrel and now can’t wait to add it to their collections when it launches. We’ve also realised that if we continue to spend time looking for a publishing partner who believes us, then instead of releasing the game this year we’ll almost certainly end up running out of cash.
We’ve stuck with this strategy as long as we possibly could. We’ve tried to play by the rules and take Quarrel through the industry the old-fashioned way, because we realise how important good marketing support, etc., is – but you know what? It just isn’t worth the hassle any more. Being developers “of a certain age” we cut our teeth in the industry at a time when you listened to Publisher’s opinions. But those days are clearly behind us now – there are just so many alternative ways of getting though to people who love games, and we’d rather save our energies for people who love games, play games and buy games than waste it trying to convince the industry of their worth (not that those groups are always entirely mutually exclusive of course!).
All the people who are doing things we like, admire and aspire to in games at the moment are bypassing the established industry and going straight to their audience, and now we understand why. It’s because the road to Innovation and Progress does not pass anywhere close to the established industry it seems (okay, with the odd exception, but you know what I mean).
We’ve realised we’re “not normal” and don’t make games that fit neatly in to income forecast spreadsheets. And we’re okay with that. Mostly. We also know we will always find it a challenge to get support for our games within “the industry”, and we’ve reluctantly accepted it’s now time to stop trying – despite the tremendous pain it’s going to cause us.
From this point on we’re going straight to the people who play games and value games, focusing on platforms that don’t have arbitrary gate-keepers who periodically change the requirement goal-posts halfway through development. And we’ll wait until we have absolutely conclusive proof of the value of our games before we go anywhere near the industry. After all, I think everyone at Denki would be quite willing to accept that “Gamers don’t play word games” if it was gamers telling us that, but when it’s the industry… well, you might be right, but we’d like to hear it directly from gamers themselves thanks because the ones we’ve spoken with say something quite different.
So today we’ve taken the extremely difficult decision of restructuring and scaling back the business. It’s hoped this will give Denki the opportunity to build itself back up with a different business model as a publisher of an entirely new category of game – not Casual Games; or Hardcore Games; but Denki Games.
It’s taken ten years to put the current, most awesome line-up of the Denki team together, and there’s not a single person here that doesn’t bring something truly special to the group. We’ll miss every one of them that has to leave us. Quarrel is all the better for their input, but cashflow forecasts don’t lie. We couldn’t risk becoming another “typical games developer” where the first anyone knows about the challenges facing the business is when the staff suddenly don’t get paid and/or can’t get in to the building. That’s just Totally Not Denki.
So, please bear with us during this difficult time. I’ve only just announced this internally to the team and we’re all still coming to terms with it. It’s going to be some time before we get through the consultation process and have things resolved, ready to move forwards again. So we’ll be going incommunicado for a bit. Please don’t think we’re being rude if we’re uncommunicative, it’s just that we’ve got a lot to deal with internally right now.
We’ll start updating/blogging/tweeting/whatevering again just as soon as we have things sorted out, but it’s going to be a sad time for us all over the next while. Please spare a thought for the whole team at Denki right now. We could all do with your support at the moment more than ever.
One thing doesn’t change though: Denki will be releasing Quarrel this year – supposing we have to bring the board game version round each of your houses one-by-one.
Thanks,
Colin.
PS: And if any companies out there are looking for top quality people to bolster their teams please get in touch with jobs@denki.co.uk to let us know about any opportunities.

Dear All,
Very sorry to hear this news today. We have been tightly linked to Denki in the past and we know many people in the team.
Our best wishes go out to all who will be left without work and it is our sincere hope that they will find employment quickly.
Yours sincerely

This is very disheartening news. I hope the effected Denki staff land on their feet and that Quarrel has it’s chance and everyone can see how great it is.
Best of luck in the future to everyone on the team

Proper gutted by this news, and all my best wishes and hopes are with everyone at Denki. Born and raised in the area and studying CGT at Abertay, I naturally have an overwhelming desire for all the local games companies to do well, especially ones that ‘get it’, which Denki does in spades. Hoping, given time, you all come back, better and stronger.
Best wishes to all,
AJ

Gutted to hear this sad news. It’s in keeping with the professional way Denki presents itself to be up front and on top of the situation, even when times are tough, which is commendable.
All the best to Denki and those members of staff who move on, that they find new employment swiftly and that Denki emerges from this black time still undeniably Denki.
Sean
The best thing that’ll come of this is that those who leave Denki might take a little Denki spirit to some otherwise dull & dreary companies.
You guys are honestly one of the few truly respectable developers left, and it saddens me to think what a state the industry is in that you guys are received in this way.
I’m geniunely shocked to hear about this!
I absolutley love Quarrel, it’s a fantastic little game and one that I’ll definitely be spending money on when it’s available to buy.
Anyone who thinks this game wouldn’t sell by the bucket load is a short sighted idiot!
Totally gutted for you guys. Good luck to anyone who has to move on from Denki because of this madness.
Billy
Absolutely gutted for you guys! You do these things so well and it is tragic that things have come to this.
Best of luck with the restructuring which is a hard thing to go through. Best wishes to all of you who have to leave and good luck with the job hunt.
I hope you will all go on to do even better things!
Sad news. I think the right decision has been made to scale back rather than the whole company going under, but it’s a sad state of affairs when the norm appears to be games developers losing their jobs regularly due to the economic climate and the changing face of gaming.
I’m sure everyone will land on their feet; you all are an extremely talented group of individuals and talent like that doesn’t go un-noticed. Best of luck with the future, Denki guys and girls.
Dear All,
I’m very saddened by this news. Denki is an extraordinary company with great people and, by the look of it, a great game.
It troubles me greatly that you haven’t found a suitable publisher yet, both because of your situation and the situation of the industry in general, particularly for us other ‘not normals’s.
My very best wishes to those finding new employment and to Denki, you’re all very talented folk.
Best,
Berbank
Very sad news. Good luck with the change of direction.

Heartbreaking news
I can only hope that Denki, the Denkites and Quarrel get all the good things that they so deserve in the future. Very many positive thoughts coming your way from us here.
Very sorry to hear about this news.
Having been through redundancy myself I can understand how some people are feeling. I know it’s easy to say but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. For me it was a huge blessing in disguise and had I not moved on I’d have very quickly become institutionalised. Given the talent these developers obviously have and the experience gained from working at the admired Denki games they’ve got a great platform from which to get straight back into the industry or perhaps something else. It’s an opportunity. I start my new job tomorrow.
With regards to Denki as a company. Companies have to restructure to stay relevant. If a company realises there is a problem and doesn’t act then they’re doing an greater injustice not only to themselves but to their employees. This is industry and unfortunately today there is no such thing as a safe job.
I wish those remaining at Denki all the best for the future and those who are moving on all the best with theirs.
Sorry to hear the bad news guys. I admire the way you’ve stuck to your principles, and gone against the “collective industry wisdom”. It’s a shame the publishing side of the industry doesn’t understand or appreciate what you’ve done, and what great games you’ve created. (Most of us in other parts of the biz do, however, so take some consolation from that.)
Good luck for the future, both to those staying at Denki, and those moving on elsewhere.
So sorry to hear this, thinking of all of you and wishing you the very best for the future.
Shocked and saddened by the news. My thoughts are with you all
I’m so, so sad to hear this… I was planning to get my hands on Quarrel too when it’s out (and still am!) – it looks like an awesome game and those who spoke passionately about it convinced me long ago.
I wish the best of luck to all those who have to move on and to Denki and those who remain there.
Sorry to hear about your losses. I’ve always been uplifted by Denki’s alternative thinking, but it’s disheartening to see so much ‘resistance’ from publishers.
With regards to publishers taking the ‘low risk’ route and having the total opposite opinions to the actual gamers, I’ve heard much the same gripes from many of the other highly innovative developers – even some of the larger studios. Perhaps its time that a NEW industry is created to do away with the antiquated bureaucracy that seems to pervade the games (or movie, or music) industry?
Sad News. It’s becoming a crappy industry for creativity. Best of luck to everyone involved and I hope it works out for all of you.
Really shocked to hear this guys, I’m one of those gamers who loves Quarrel and ever since playing it in your office I’ve been desperate to get my hands on my own copy.
It’s a sad state of affairs indeed when the creative companies aren’t getting the support they deserve.
I wish everyone at Denki the best of luck with whatever happens next, I’m sure you’ll all find your feet again very soon.
Sad to hear that this has happened. Denki not only make truely innovative games they also do it quietly, with integrity and no little talent. The problem is clearly not the Denki ‘product’ but the broken games industry ecosystem. I know it’s little comfort on a day like today but the publishers that have created and sustained this broken system are next in line.
I have no doubt that not only will Denki survive but you will go on to even better things than you would have achieved in the old model. This cloud will have a silver lining in time. Hope all the (very talented) staff affected find new jobs asap.
I am shocked to hear the news. Quarrel received huge interests at Dare ProtoPlay, when they first put it to test to the public.
But I have total trust in Colin and the Denki vision. Reality may be harsh. I believe in the power of dream and it can trully break even the strongest obstacles.
I look forward to seeing Denki coming out from this stronger and wiser.
For those staff who are leaving, yes I agree with someone here saying, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Continue to believe in yourself and I wish you all the best.
Sorry to hear the news, though I believe the new direction will turn out to be a positive one. If only more developers focused as much on the end-user rather than the gate-keeping process, I reckon the spectrum of existing game types would be much wider than just a handful of predictable genres.
If there’s anything we can do to drum up support for the game between now and you presumably self-publishing it, then please drop me a line.
Ash
I am so so sorry to hear about it. This really isn’t fair and having played Quarrel myself I really enjoyed it and find it disheartening that publishers don’t want to take the risk with it.
I wish Denki all the best with Quarrel and their future, and my heart goes out to those who have lost their job. I have no doubt in my mind that they won’t be out of a job for long.
I wish you guys all the best.

Well, I suppose Easter is the right time to ‘rise again’, but man, this is awful news – both for the immeasurably talented people there and for the industry at large.
I didn’t know that you guys were looking for a publisher for Quarrel, but that you couldn’t get one to bite is astonishing and, as you say, a telling indicator of the way many publishers are going.
Can’t wait to see Quarrel in whatever form it may emerge, and really hope that everyone affected finds something soon.

Best of luck guys
I just heard the news. Very sad for everyone involved or directly affected.
There isn’t anything to add to the points in the blog – the industry has changed radically, and good companies need to take steps to survive.
Best of luck.

Sorry to hear this lads. It takes a lot of bottle to go it alone in the games industry these days. You should stick Quarrel out on the IPad and IPhone. There’s a lot of talk in my office about Scrabble on the IPad – “Gamers don’t buy word games” – lets see!
