Well, it’s now two weeks… two weeks since Quarrel was finally unleashed upon an unsuspecting world; and what a two weeks!
It’s been really satisfying seeing how positively the game has been received by gamers around the world. After several years of trying to persuade the industry’s various gate-keepers of Quarrel’s merits I admit there’s a certain cathartic quality to be had from reading the myriad of praise that’s now being written about the game.
So, in celebration of Quarrel’s first two weeks, here’s some of our favourite quotes about it so far:
- “Quarrel is just a lovely, skilfully-crafted joy. Denki’s genius is in making you feel that hours in the game’s company have been educational rather than a time-killing indulgence. That is the loftiest aim of all word games. Few really achieve it.”: The Guardian
- “Daily challenges keep the game fresh, Twitter integration lets you brag to your followers about how gr8 ur speeling iz, and the bright presentation makes Quarrel Deluxe a game with wide appeal that you’ll want to keep coming back to.”: TouchArcade
- “Strategy and word game fans will both find things to love about this game and players that enjoy both genres will be in heaven.”: 148Apps
- “The best iPhone game of the year is also the best board game, with a cleverly addictive mash-up between Risk and Scrabble.”: The Metro
- “Words With Friends was an iPad game that I would fire up every night for mind-stimulating gaming fun. It’s been given the boot.”: 2X-D
- “Quarrel is one of those rarest of things: a smart game that aims to make you smarter.”: incgamers
- “Quarrel is a victory for good ideas and also for clever implementation.”: Eurogamer
- “Quarrel is a really amazing title, and I bet we’ll see it become quite popular as more and more gamers discover it on iOS.”: The Unofficial Apple Website
Pretty good stuff, right? And that’s without multiplayer! (Yes, yes, we’ve heard…)
So, from everyone here at Denki, thanks to all y’all for making these first two weeks of Quarrel a blast – it means a lot to us!
Colin.

A lolbuffalo (a loffalo)?
It’s good to see my work continued.
No less than we predicted, of course.
I’ll bring cakes to celebrate!
@Dave T: Very true – but that’s for a future blog of its own…
It’s a great game but I’m hoping for at least single iPad multiplayer, it would be awesome to play against friends, one sitting opposite another in a battle. I hope the devs let us know if they plan to add this. Cheers!
@GiHub – thanks for the feedback; really glad to hear you’re enjoying Quarrel. Various (boring) commercial obligations mean we can’t talk about future plans for the game at the moment; however, what I can say is that there was a post over on the “Quarrel” Facebook page a day or so ago saying a multiplayer update was “coming soon”. And, as gamers ourselves, we’re just as keen to play Quarrel multiplayer as everyone else – so best get that single player practice in while you can I reckon!
@denkicolin: Thanks for the heads up! My thoughts on Game Center multiplayer are that if you play random opponents, it probably wouldn’t work well as Game Center seems to favor shorter games. But it would definitely be tremendous when playing your real friends. Personally I actually look forward to single machine matches on my iPad. I think it would be excellent one facing another. I might have to use one hand to cover my word when I’m typing it with my other hand, but I think I’d prefer this over timed pass and play. Great job on the game as is, so much fun & polish, it shines!
Ok so I’ve purchased Quarrel Deluxe and I think it’s a really fantastic game, highly polished and a lot of fun! Great job! And I was never a fan of word games before. A few comments I have:
- multiplayer, this game demands it!
- I think the campaign (domination mode) is too difficult. I think I saw somewhere where you posted that 7% completed the campaign. And some of them I sure cheated with some scrabble web sites that generate words (easily done by taking a screenshot and switching to the photo app). I don’t think that’s good: most of the people who do buy this game are probably word game fans, if so few finish it, it means a lot of people are frustrated by the difficulty and that’s never a good thing in my opinion. Even still, maybe having the last island or two with higher difficulty is acceptable, but I was struggling already on the first one with Malik. I believe Malik for example should have appeared only at the final level in island 2.
Just my 2 cents, don’t get me wrong, I’m loving it! (although I probably will never finish island 3 let alone island 4)
@GiHub: Thanks for supporting Quarrel by purchasing Quarrel Deluxe! Both your observations are valid concerns that we also share here at Denki. We’re hoping to have the opportunity to address these in a future update before too long.

Quarrel has quickly become my go-to game whenever I have a spare moment. I am a huge word game nerd, and the strategy required for battles make it so much more exciting than anything else around! The animation, the characters, the music… There is so much to love. I wanted to offer some feedback:
- At the end of a game, my username is apparently too long for the “farewell” message screen, so it cuts off my name with an ellipsis. Perhaps the font could instead shrink so that the whole username shows up?
- It would be great to see a running average of my Word IQ during the course of a game.
- I love being able to see the anagram after a battle scrolling at the bottom of the screen, but I would also like to know what the highest scoring word would have been for the number of troops I had.
Thanks!
